On both sides of the Calumpang River, in the heart of Batangas City, are twenty-foot sloping dikes that stop the erosion of the river bank and prevent the destructive incursion of river water on the surrounding area. With the washing away of the other bridge that crosses the river, the Calumpang Bridge serves as the only access to areas on both sides of the waterway. It is here where people spend a sizable portion of their time waiting to move in the traffic. It is here too where the eyes and the mind blend in sweet surrender of their objectivity and take on the full meaning of the soulful message painted on pristine-white background on the faces of the dikes —
EVEN IF OTHERS ARE NOT
EVEN IF OTHERS WILL NOT
EVEN IF OTHERS CAN NOT.
Taking the message to heart and living according to its concept prevent the erosion of human values and uplift the soul in much the same way that the dikes prevent the weathering of the land by the sea; so much more if the message becomes a part of daily life.
The painted messages were inaugurated on the morning of March 20 with BCBP – Batangas City Chapter leaders (Manny Rosales, Rolly and Avis Alibuyog, Boy Moraleja, Danny and Myrna Aguila, Raul and Leyn Mercado, Iting Babasa, Emmanuel Matibag and Eric Robles) and Barangay Chairmen Dr. Libio Macatangay and Chairman Salagubang in attendance.
