Mini Sharing during NAC37 Assembly
I was previously an employee who dreamed of having a business of our own. My wife and I prayed hard to have one as we believed that having a business of our own would be more advantageous to us as a family as compared to being enslaved by corporate intramurals.
Taking to heart God’s promise in Jeremiah 29:11 and I quote “For I know what I have planned for you, ‘says the Lord. ‘I have plans to prosper you, not to harm you. I have plans to give you a future filled with hope” we waited for it faithfully until in April of 2014, we were appointed as the “agent” of Lite Shipping Corporation in Cagayan de Oro. We handled the operations and sales of Lite Shipping initially in the Cagayan de Oro-Jagna route then followed by the Cagayan de Oro-Cebu route.
When we started the business, we were faced with the challenge of putting our services in order because the fixer/scalper system in Cagayan de Oro port is rampant during peak season. We pitied the people who were forced to shell out twice the amount of money because the fixers had bought already the tickets ahead of time. The process of getting tickets is simple and easy and you cannot really determine who are the legitimate passengers and fixers.
During our initial operations, I was approached by some “negotiator/representatives” who offered us significant amounts of money in exchange for relaxing our rules and by tolerating them. But being BCBP members, we made a promise to bring Christ into our new marketplace and win the marketplace for Him. So we ignored the offer and did what is right.
Slowly we implemented changes including but not limited to the ID system. The initial process was very challenging because the fixers – in any ports for that matter – are very creative. You have to be fast in designing controls otherwise they will leave you behind. We have come up with different ideas to prevent the fixers from getting hold of our tickets. There were even instances when we had to involve the police and file cases against them just to create examples.
Today, as we celebrate our 3rd year with Lite Shipping, we can proudly say that we have been able to bring a significant change in the port of Cagayan de Oro and we have been able to reduce significantly the incidences of scalping.
But our campaign in bringing Christ to the marketplace and winning the marketplace for Him is not limited towards our campaign against scalping. Being BCBP members, we made also the promise to bring Christ into our new marketplace by paying our employees wages above the standard, by giving them full benefits and by paying the right taxes.
God gave us this business and we want to honor Him by becoming His change agent in the marketplace by being HONEST – even if others are not, even if others will not, even if others cannot.
