Human suffering has been in existence since Adam and Eve were banished from the Garden of Eden. It is a sign of the disorder that has entered God’s world/creation through man’s rebellion, disobedience and sin. Here are a few Scripture selections to ponder on to enable us to better understand suffering and adversities in our lives and in the world today.
1 Thess. 5:9-11
2 Corinthians 4:8-15
1 Peter 4:12-19
What other Scripture verses console you in your times of suffering, pain or difficulties?
1. Look around the world today, as well as in your respective communities, and try to identify the sources of sin, disobedience, or rebellion that are causing such sufferings as famine, wars, civil strife, poverty, oppression, pestilence, diseases, natural disasters and calamities, etc. Read and reflect on Romans 1:28-32.
2. Reflect on the sufferings and pain you have experienced in your life? What do you think were the underlying causes of your sufferings? Why do you think God allowed such suffering and difficulties in your life? What should be your response to such suffering?
3. How can we minimize the presence of suffering in our lives?
4. What help or advice can you give others who are faced with adversities and sufferings? In what practical and material ways should you show your care, love and concern for their difficulties and suffering?
