The recent typhoon Sendong devasted vast areas of Mindanao and the Visayas with the greatest destruction located in the areas of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, and Dumaguete. Because of the extensive damage to life and property especially in these areas where the Brotherhood is active, the BCBP National Officers have activated the BCBP’s Calamity Fund and are accepting monetary donations for relief of the victims. Donations in kind should be coursed through your own respective chapters and/or the BCBP’s National Office.
Several videos, that are available on BCBP National Facebook, can give you a better idea of the extent of damage. To date, close to 500 have been declared dead and more are still unaccounted for. 100,000 families are now displaced/homeless. This is only the stats for Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. We are receiving reports of similar devastation in Negros Oriental.
An urgent request from Dito dela Cerna, CH SoCal, originally from Cagayan de Oro, specifies some of their most urgent needs: “We need clothes, shoes, linens, towels, etc. in our relief efforts. Monetary donations are most welcome.” The SoCal chapter is actively gathering relief goods and monetary donations, according to Bro Dito.
Your financial assistance will be greatly appreciated. Please remit donations through the BCBP National office which will advance funds to Cagayan de Oro. Or you may deposit funds directly to “BCBP NATIONAL”, BPI Current Account 3561-0451-93, Buendia-Pasong Branch; then fax a copy of the Deposit Slip to National Office 632-819-0051. Be sure to specify Donor in your fax.
Compassion is a call, a demand of nature, to relieve the unhappy even as hunger is a natural call for food. Let us exercise our Christian compassion for those affected in Mindanao and Negros Oriental by the recent typhoon and torrential rains and flash floods. It is said that Christmas is a season of the heart. This is a cry for us to open our hearts to help the typhoon victims through our prayers, our pockets, and our compassionate presence.
