The storied rivalry between Makati and Alabang Chapter Golfers ended in a saga of synergy and victory … with help of golfers from Manila, QC and other Metro chapters. The fund raiser BCBP NAC32 golf tourney, dubbed as “Be Honest Fore His Glory,” attracted more than 100 golfers from all over Luzon. It was held last January 30 at the Ayala Greenfields Golf and Country Club, a beautifully landscaped but challenging course that was made even more difficult on that day due to prevailing gusty winds. Participants poured in as early as 6:30 am to register with the BCBP Makati sisters manning the registration table.
The Makati – Alabang Golf rivalry started two years ago with exchanges of golf anecdotes and bragging rites amongst its members. This was sprinkled with challenges, bets and intrigues until it produced no less than 4 tournaments that ended up in a victory for Makati. The “tour” which was dubbed as a “BCBP Ryder Cup” started indeed in that fashion using Match play formats. For year 2012, they postponed their first game in order to focus their efforts on this important event.
Ronnie Caballero of CIGA spearheaded the tournament preparations in support of Billy Gualberto’s NAC32 Ways and Means Committee. CIGA or Christians in Golf Association is composed mainly of Makati and some Manila Golfers. Recognizing as well, that the efforts of the two chapters will not be enough, Bro Ronnie, like King David uniting the tribes of Israel, called upon the other Metro Chapters to “send their troops” thus leading to this fruitful effort to raise funds. Another comparison was the movie “300” where a dedicated small group was able to amass a huge victory in the name of BCBP.
To make sure their efforts would bear fruit, many BCBP member-owned companies, as well as members themselves, sponsored the event. Many BCBP golfers themselves played. Friends from golfers’ groups from such Clubs as Alabang, Eastridge, Summit and Orchard, were on hand to support the cause. And, as well, BCBP golfer friends like Bro Jay Cruz’s PSME golfers and “Guwapings” of Alabang represented by Tigs Caronongan were there. Players who were committed to show up at the simultaneously held Mango Tee at Alabang, had to move their tee-off dates to keep their January 30 tee off schedule free. No effort was spared to make this dream of a tournament come true.
This time, however the bragging rights of the BCBP star golfers were eclipsed by the stellar participants of current club champions who participated. Lino Magpantay, a Fil-American golfer scored a whopping 77 gross to win his 2nd BCBP tournament. Lino is the current Senior Club Champ of Tagaytay Highlands as well as the Senior Champ of the Samsung Tourney of Champions held at Eagle ridge. The Class A trophy was won by Dennis Gonzales, current club champ of Summit Golf.
On all fronts the golf tourney was successful. It not only provided a venue for bonding and fellowship among BCBP golfers and friends; it also earned a substantial sum to support the upcoming NAC32, 2012, to be hosted by South Metro Manila this April at the SMX Convention Center. At the end of the day, the lack of trophies did not matter to BCBP Golfers as they knew they had already won a unique invisible trophy – a victory “Fore His Glory” won at the Fairways to Heaven. See you all on 13th-14th April at NAC 32 at SMX. –Report filed by Danny Silbor, BCBP Makati
