The Personal Testimony of Bro Red Valencia, BCBP Rizal

I am an urban planner with a Masters from UP in 1993, and a BS in civil and environmental engineering from Mapua University. I work with both government and private entities in planning for clean environment, low-cost housing projects, comprehensive land use planning for sustainable development. And in all these businesses, my wife and I have the best consultant, the Holy Spirit, to be with us.

I attended my first BCBP breakfast in 2007, but didn’t join the community until after I had suffered a gall bladder surgery, severe financial difficulties and the miracle of having my hospital and doctor expenses shouldered by the PSCO through a chance encounter with a social worker. After that, my wife and I resolved to search for a community where we could do service in gratitude for God’s mercy and grace.

Do you know what attracted me to be committed to the BCBP? Since we joined three years ago, the number one thing that attracted me and keeps me committed is the sincerity of the brothers and sisters in the BCBP community. Here I see real men and women making an effort and taking the time to practice their faith and to live a Christian community life.

Next to the human qualities, number two is that I can always count on them in times of need. We pray for each other, and I can feel it, I can touch their spiritual presence. I see others like myself who are able to rise up from their difficulties and gain financial improvements and personal growth. During our Action Group Meetings, we lift up to God real intentions, real business concerns, real personal difficulties, not a few of them in real tears. Then in our next AGM I can listen to joyous thanksgiving and praises to God for answered prayers. They are so real that it boosts my confidence and faith in God who can save me. My fellow AGM members are also prayer partners so we can have relevant, personal and specific support.

Last December 2008 after joining the BCBP Rizal Chapter through BCLP 16, I started taking up technical matters with the Holy Spirit. I began listening to Him, through a process of discernment and prayer, as to how to come up with specific designs and how I can finish them on time with less or no mistakes, and without losing sleep or quality time with my family. Some days later I realized that I was working faster, with less or no mistakes, and was practically seeing the designs in my mind’s eye, quite complete and well-thought out. My productivity doubled and tripled.

So now, I make it a point to actually pray while working because I know that by offering my work to Him, it becomes a prayer. The Holy Spirit, my Consultant, counsels me so that I no longer dialogue with myself as I prepare my presentations, I dialogue with Him. I hold the words of John 14:16,26 in my heart as Jesus says, “The Helper whom the Father will send in my name will teach you everything.”

When I make business presentations, my wife stays in a nearby room and prays to the Spirit, in Jesus’ name, for my guidance and that He will touch my audience. She is my soulmate and prayer partner in every sense of the word. Together we constantly invite the Spirit to transform each day into an interconnected Work of God.

Everyday becomes an opportunity to live my commitment, to “walk my talk”, to work with the Holy Spirit’s guidance. It is easier said than done, and at first my busy work schedule and business meetings prevented me from a regular prayer time. Then I remember thinking of my prayer time and scripture reading the same way I consider my lunch hour. Everything else must wait until I finish my lunch.

So I have learned to schedule my prayer time and scripture time, to make and keep my appointments with God and His Holy Spirit, usually early mornings. What is important is that I get inspiration from the Spirit to start the day right; I get advice on how to achieve my goals of the day, advice on what things to say and how to present my business proposals.

It is in my daily meditations where I offer each item in my 8-hour workday. It isn’t enough to just do my work well, but it matters also to know for whom did I offer my work to – so, the grace I receive through my work I channel to people whom I pray for, like the Pope, my family, and the people whom I want to invite for the BCBP Breakfast. I like to think that in the silence of my work, I’m like an electric generator sending power to whomever I channel electricity. Without prayer, my life is worthless. It is only with God that my work becomes productive.

I am learning a new way (to me) of meditation – without words, by visualization of what I would like to happen. As I vocalize my prayer request, I visualize the desired result and express the joy of actually having received it. So many times I have experienced the real intervention of the Holy Spirit in my work with sudden inspirations, leading me to persons and events that contribute to business successes, helping me avoid hurting people’s feelings, so many times that I know this is no longer a coincidence but truly the work of the Holy Spirit.

God has called me to be right where I am, where I live and work, right in the marketplace, to be as I am now, an engineer and urban designer – participating actively in God’s creation through the actual design and construction of buildings, real estate and even town planning. Whatever I do now, I’m very much aware of the presence of God at my side. He has promised in John 14:16 that He will stay with me forever. And God does not change His mind because He is God.

I urge you, brothers and sisters, to allow the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God, to enter not only your spiritual life, but to become your Consultant in your professional life for Jesus tells us: “Whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do even greater ones than these…” Jn 14:12.

Your words are coming from the Holy spirit! Indeed, how true that He teaches everything as long as He is with us. Many people forget about Him when they feel they are succeeding in their works or in their life, but later they fail. And what is important- What is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world but lose his own soul. Matthew 16:26.

Hi bro. Red,

I am inspired by the practical dimension of your sharing. Truly, the Holy Spirit wants to be involved in all aspects of our life. So many times, we shut him off from our business activities, not realizing that we in fact need Him more for wisdom and correct decision making. Thank you for sharing. God bless you.
