WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

More than 100 names of or descriptive phrases are used in the Bible to describe the Holy Spirit, the third Person in the Trinity. The following list gives just a few. For each reference, discover what the name or descriptive phrase used for the Holy Spirit is, then reflect, discuss and share on what that name reveals about the Spirit’s function or nature.

The seven-fold names of the Spirit are found in Isaiah 11:2. They are:

a. The Spirit of the Lord. His identity name, describing who He is
b. The Spirit of Wisdom. His ability to discern people and motives
c. The Spirit of Understanding. His ability to distinguish the authentic from the counterfeit
d. The Spirit of Counsel. His ability to make the right decisions
e. The Spirit of Might. His ability to carry out His decisions and purposes
f. The Spirit of Knowledge. He knows all about God
g. The Spirit of the Fear of the Lord. His work in helping people approach God
